Offices also use metal storage cabinets in many different applications. There is, of course, the basic filing cabinet, either 2 drawer or 4 drawer. The modern office, however, has many more options available. Everyone has seen the huge filing system in their doctors offices; long lines of open or closed shelf space, operated by a hand wheel to get to one shelf or another. If every shelf were stationary, they would take up too much floor space, which is often limited. By using cabinets that are moveable in this way, precious floor space is conserved. There is also a storage cabinet that is ubiquitous but not necessarily obvious: the mail cart. Some are made of wire baskets, but others are fully cabinets that are capable of being locked.
To make sure you get the best quality cabinets, visit a reputable vendor. That way, you’ll also be able to get more information about selecting the best cabinet for your needs, and you can rest assured that your new industrial storage cabinets meet OSHA and other requirements. When you put a substantial amount of weight on a caster system, you should make sure that the wheels can handle the load as well as the overall structure of the dolly. When a caster can’t handle the weight of the item it’s carrying, there is potential for tipping which is a definite safety hazard. Casters come in various materials as well as sizes, with features such as breaking systems, swivel and rigid. Typical 5” caster wheels can be made of Urethane, Thermo rubber and even Steel. If you need a large platform it’s recommended to have wheel brakes, swivel casters on the ends and rigid casters in the middle of your platform cart.
If you insist on using storage or file cabinets that you already own and want to convert them to mobile cabinets, try making your caster base out of 12 gauge metal opposed to using an existing dolly that may be too large or small for your particular cabinet. It’s recommended that 1 to 2 inch angle iron would be preferable with solid welded beads throughout the armature to ensure the integrity and strength to handle the cabinet’s weight.
If you have a heavy duty flatbed cart that can handle weight make sure the depth and width are sufficient for the height of the cabinet you’re making mobile else the cabinet will tip. For security purposes making a cabinet mobile can also make that cabinet at a greater risk for theft but by adding some kind of locking mechanism for the wheels or holding bracket you will deter any thieves from rolling your cabinet away.
